Curriculum Development, Revision, and Evaluation Process: Assessing curriculum designs and models

CSTP 3: Understanding and Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning

In EDUC 537, Curriculum Development, Revision, and Evaluation Process, my objective was to examine a subject matter and note how to organize the course material for that subject based on state standards. Although I am a science teacher, I challenged myself by exploring the subject of high school math, and reviewed what standards pertained to each level and how they could be implemented and how to apply Common Core and school district standards when creating the subject matter curriculum. I learned specific strategies, such as problem-solving, the use of symbols, and specialized vocabulary, that need to be organized properly to support students' learning efficiency. Additionally, it is important that I build a solid foundation of course concepts in the beginning of the year, for mathematical concepts to build upon each other. This means that students and the instructor may struggle to learn or teach, respectively, if the previously taught material was rushed or not reinforced. Organized course material is crucial in creating an effective flow in the classroom environment. I have greatly progressed in the organization of course work by creating lesson plans that meet the guidelines of NGSS and Common Core in order to meet CSTP 3, understanding and organizing subject matter for student learning. Some instructors may feel comfortable reusing the same material for next year’s classes; however, I will most certainly take away or add certain activities and lessons that may not or may be successful, respectively. Please see the study attached below.
