Differentiated Classroom 7 - 12: Identified Assets and and Needs in Learning Environment Case Study

CSTP 2: Creating and Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning

In my course TEP 533, Differentiated Classroom 7-12, I examined a case study of a student that went from a high socioeconomic status to becoming homeless. Researching this case and identifying ways to help this student was very eye-opening. Many times, teachers do not realize that students may be struggling outside of school. The student may not have eaten breakfast or is wearing the same clothes as yesterday. Perhaps the student does not even have a home or electricity to seek safety in, much less complete his or her homework. As a result, this study highlights the importance of assisting students, especially if the student lacks financial resources. Teachers are mentors to students, and should learn how to seek the proper resources for those students that are underprivileged so that they have a fair chance in succeeding at school. In terms of my personal experience, I have yet to note a student that has struggled financially, but I understand that some students hide this out of fear of being shamed. Regardless, I always provide my students with resources that they may not be able to obtain at home such as paper, pencils, tablets, whiteboards, markers, books, and all necessary materials they need to succeed in the class, which meets CSTP 2, creating and maintaining effective environments for student learning. Please see study attached below.
