Family/Community/ School Connections: Connecting to families and communities through the ethnography

CSTP 1: Engaging and Supporting All Students in Learning

In EDUC 536, Family/Community/School Connections, I studied how the surrounding environment and community of a school may impact its demographic. I performed an ethnographic study where I collected reliable data through interview, observation, and records review to gain a rich, thick understanding of the perceptions and experiences of my students, parents, community, and members at the school . It was interesting to note the diverse needs of my students in this community. I reflected on how these needs may be different for individuals in a school that is either in a more affluent or less affluent community. This study allowed me to understand the importance of researching my school environment and creating rapport with students so that I can provide them with the necessary tools to succeed. For instance, in the beginning of the semester as a student-teacher, I had students complete surveys in which they shared their interests and background. Additionally, in the beginning or end of class, as well as breaks, I spoke with students about their personal interests. I also related scientific discussions or topics to the community surrounding the school. I found that reaching out to parents with low student test scores, as well as congratulating parents with high student test scores was beneficial, as the parents were more engaged in their students' academic life. This artifact demonstrates growth in supporting and engaging all students in learning by providing academic and social resources is essential, CSTP 1, engaging and supporting all students in learning.
